How does Mississippi tax capital gains?

As ordinary income. Mississippi has no separate capital gains rate, so gains above the $10,000 band at 0% are taxed at 4% for 2026. Long-term gains get lower federal rates than this calculator applies to other income, so use the capital gains tax calculator for the federal side.

How this calculator works

Mississippi doesn't start from federal AGI; it builds income from the lines on its own return, which leave out Social Security and exempt retirement income. For wages and other taxable income the result is the same, so the calculator subtracts the Mississippi standard deduction and exemptions, then taxes taxable income above $10,000 at 4%.

Married couples who both earn income can file a combined return that gives each spouse a $10,000 band at 0%. This estimate treats joint income as one spouse's, which can overstate tax by up to $400.

Worked example

A single filer with $75,000 in wages, no other income, no 401(k) contributions and no dependents has $66,700.00 of Mississippi taxable income and about $2,268.00 in Mississippi income tax, 3.02% of wages. After federal income tax of $7,670.00 and $5,737.50 in Social Security and Medicare, estimated take-home pay is $59,324.50, or $4,943.71 a month.

What this estimate excludes

The retirement income and Social Security exemptions, the extra exemptions for age 65 or blindness, itemized deductions, the child and dependent care credit, other credits and any local taxes.
