Hawaii tax brackets for 2026
Hawaii taxes income at 12 rates from 1.4% to 11%. Act 46 of 2024 widened the brackets for 2025 and nearly doubled the standard deduction for 2026, so 2026 uses the 2025 brackets with the new $8,000, $12,000 and $16,000 deductions. Act 24 of 2026 changes the brackets again starting in 2027.

Hawaii income tax questions

Yes. Hawaii taxes income at graduated rates from 1.4% to 11% for 2026.
How much is Hawaii income tax on $100,000?
A single filer with $100,000 in wages and no other income, 401(k) contributions or dependents owes about $5,796.06 in Hawaii income tax for 2026, 5.80% of wages. After federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, take-home pay is about $73,383.94, or $2,822.46 every two weeks.
What is the Hawaii standard deduction for 2026?
For 2026, the Hawaii standard deduction is $8,000 for single filers and married couples filing separately, $16,000 for married couples filing jointly, and $12,000 for heads of household. How does Hawaii tax capital gains?
As ordinary income, except that net long-term capital gains are taxed at no more than 7.25%. Long-term gains also get lower federal rates than this calculator applies to other income, so use the capital gains tax calculator for the federal side.
What is Hawaii's food/excise tax credit?
A refundable credit for lower-income residents that offsets the general excise tax on food: $70 to $220 for each exemption when AGI is under $40,000 for single filers, or under $60,000 for other filing statuses. It is claimed on Form N-311 even if you owe no income tax. This calculator does not include it.
How this calculator works
The calculator starts from federal AGI, subtracts the Hawaii standard deduction and a $1,144 exemption for you, your spouse on a joint return and each dependent, then applies the rate schedule for your filing status.
Hawaii's return uses a tax table when taxable income is under $100,000, which figures tax on income bands, so the official amount can differ from this exact calculation by a few dollars.
Worked example
A single filer with $75,000 in wages, no other income, no 401(k) contributions and no dependents has $65,856.00 of Hawaii taxable income and about $3,896.06 in Hawaii income tax, 5.19% of wages. After federal income tax of $7,670.00 and $5,737.50 in Social Security and Medicare, estimated take-home pay is $57,696.44, or $4,808.04 a month.
What this estimate excludes
The refundable food/excise tax credit, the Hawaii earned income tax credit, the low-income household renters credit, the exclusion for employer-funded pensions, the 7.25% maximum rate on capital gains, the extra exemption for age 65, the child and dependent care credit, itemized deductions and other credits.
