Indiana homestead exemption
- For taxes paid in 2026, Indiana's homestead standard deduction is $48,000 of assessed value; it falls to $40,000 for taxes paid in 2027 and phases out by 2031. A supplemental deduction then takes 40% off the remaining assessed value for taxes paid in 2026, rising to 66.7% by 2031.
- Owners 65 or older with adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less ($70,000 on a joint return) get a $150 credit, and an over-65 circuit breaker credit limits a qualifying owner's yearly tax increase to 2%.
- Indiana's circuit breaker caps the tax on a homestead at 1% of its gross assessed value.
- An application filed with the county auditor by January 15 applies to that year's bill, and you do not reapply unless the home is sold or the title changes.
This is the property tax homestead exemption, not the homestead exemption that protects a home from creditors in bankruptcy.

Does Indiana have a homestead exemption?
For taxes paid in 2026, Indiana's homestead standard deduction is $48,000 of assessed value; it falls to $40,000 for taxes paid in 2027 and phases out by 2031. A supplemental deduction then takes 40% off the remaining assessed value for taxes paid in 2026, rising to 66.7% by 2031. The calculator does not subtract it: the rates already reflect the exemptions owners received.
Why might a Indiana tax bill differ from this estimate?
The rate is what owner-occupiers in Indiana paid on average in 2020 through 2024, as a share of their homes' value. An actual bill depends on the home's assessed value, the levies where it sits and the exemptions its owner claims.
What the calculator leaves out
- The rate is the total real estate tax owner-occupiers reported paying divided by the total value they reported for their homes, not a tax rate set by law.
- The rate already reflects the exemptions, caps and credits typical owner-occupiers received, so the calculator does not subtract a homestead exemption again.
- An actual bill depends on the home's assessed value, the levies where it sits and the exemptions its owner claims.
- Survey estimates for small counties have wide margins of error.
Rates and medians are American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates: taxes owners paid in those years, not 2026 bills.
