Does Texas have property tax breaks for seniors?
Every school district exempts $140,000 of a home's value, and homeowners 65 and older get $60,000 more; voters raised both in November 2025. School tax for an owner 65 or older is also capped at the amount due in the year they qualify, and the cap carries over to a surviving spouse 55 or older. Cities, counties and school districts can add their own exemption of at least $3,000 for owners 65 and older, and those owners can defer property tax on their home at 5% interest until they no longer live there.
Does Texas have an estate or inheritance tax?
No. Texas has no estate or inheritance tax, and an amendment voters approved in November 2025 bars the Legislature from creating one.
What the calculator leaves out
Texas property and sales taxes are not included.
Federal tax uses the 2026 brackets, the standard deduction with the extra amount at 65, and the $6,000 senior deduction. Estimates assume no other deductions, credits or local taxes except as noted.
